A highly reliable intelligent power network that repairs itself already exists as the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin proceeds toward an energy and power supply system integrating high-quality services and all-green power by 2024.

The 2021-25 plan to create the system was agreed to on Dec 10, 2021 by the Cooperation Zone Executive Committee and China Southern Power Grid (CSG) Guangdong Power Grid. It not only isolates power supply failures when a circuit fault occurs, but automatically restores power to users. The average annual outage time for low-voltage customers in Hengqin was only 27 seconds in 2021, the Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau of CSG announced last week.

The agreement promotes construction of a Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Demonstration Zone for Smart Energy in Hengqin.

According to the National Energy Administration (NEA), Zhuhai including Hengqin ranks first among domestic prefecture-level cities with an average power supply reliability of 99.99 percent and self-healing coverage rate of 93.85 percent over the past five years.

The 2021 national power reliability data, released by NEA on June 24, shows that five of the nine Guangdong cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), namely Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Zhongshan, Guangzhou, and Foshan, recorded an annual average power outage time of full caliber of under one hour. It signifies that GBA’s power supply reliability reached an advanced level among major bay areas in the world.

Compared with major cities in the international bay areas, Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Zhongshan, and Guangzhou are in the top 50 percent of cities with high power reliability, and the average power outage time of users in core cities is lower than that in New York and San Francisco.

There currently are more than 42.36 million electricity users in the GBA (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Shenzhen), with annual power consumption of 600 billion kWh and millions of kilometers of power supply lines of various voltage levels.

CSG Guangdong Power Grid says it will continue to improve power quality assurance for the nine GBA cities. It will also provide full coverage of all voltage levels and monitoring of important sensitive customers with internationally leading power supply quality.
