Chinese Medicine Guangdong Lab’s First Academic Committee Meets in Hengqin, Plans R and D Center in Macao

The first meeting of the first academic committee of the Chinese Medicine Guangdong Laboratory, namely, the first Hengqin Medicine Science and Technology Innovation Conference, was held in Hengqin on June 15th.

As the first major academic activity for the Hengqin Laboratory, the event gathered top scholars and experts from the field, including nine academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. They are Yang Baofeng, Chen Kaixian, Zhang Boli, Li Lanjuan, Huang Luqi, Liu Liang, Fang Jiancheng, Ma Jun and Zhu Liguo.

A variety of topics were discussed by the academic committee, including original TCM theories, major disease prevention and treatment, new drug development, diagnostic equipment, treatment principles and international scientific competition.

The opening ceremony featured the launch of the Hengqin TCM model and the intelligent platform for TCM drugs. The Hengqin TCM Model aggregates vast TCM data, including 10 billion characters of TCM knowledge text and digital medical records, leveraging a high-trust TCM diagnostic knowledge base to assist doctors in precise diagnosis and personalized treatment plans.

The new drug platform integrates intelligent, automated, digital and engineering technologies to provide a one-stop solution for the entire experimental process of TCM new drug development.



Liu Liang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the director of the Guangdong Provincial Laboratory for TCM, highlighted the laboratory's focus on integrating artificial intelligence, multi-omics and mass spectrometry analysis. The goal is to position the laboratory as a hub for TCM innovation, high-end product development and global TCM advancement. He also revealed the laboratory's plan to establish R&D centers in Macao and Hong Kong to boost the presence of TCM products globally.

Fuyong Ge, Deputy Director of the executive committee of the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, expressed his expectation for collaborative efforts to make the Hengqin Laboratory a forefront of TCM research, a base for high-level talent cultivation, an important link for international cooperation, a platform for advanced achievement transformation and a strong engine for the development of TCM and Macao's home-grown branded industries.

The Hengqin Laboratory, approved by the Guangdong government on December 28, 2023, is a collaborative effort led by the Guangdong-Macao In-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin,  Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, and the Guangdong Provincial Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The laboratory aims to integrate new technologies and gather top scientific resources and talent from the Greater Bay Area, and even across the world.
